Celebrating Week of the Young Child – Music Monday

April 1, 2022

National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)'s Week of the Young Child has begun! We are starting the week off with Music Monday. See the message below from NAEYC:

"When children sing, dance, and listen to music, they develop their language and early literacy skills while being active and encouraging movement. Make up and record your own unique version of a song or write your own, and share it on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram using the #WOYC22 hashtag."

NAEYC also has additional resources on their website that talk about the importance and benefits of music in early childhood. This blog post gives tips on incorporating music at home to support play time, early literacy, learning about other cultures, and beginning to understand patterns.

This article from HighScope gives other examples of how to incorporate music into daily routines. Routines and music both support self-regulation, executive function, expression, and listening skills. Using music as a tool in creating a healthy routine for children can be very helpful!

Durham PreK has a collection of songs, musical crafts, and dances on Pinterest. Click below to view all the activities. Tag us on Instagram @durhamprek if you try any of these ideas!

Durham PreK students love music time in their classrooms! Below are some pictures of Durham's young children enjoying musical instruments, dancing, and songs with their classmates and teachers.
